It's wholly appropriate that this album is titled Alcachofa (Spanish-to-English translation: artichoke). If the kind of vivid house you hear blaring in the hip clothing store is an apple, giving the mouth an instant burst of flavor the moment the teeth puncture its skin, then the microhouse of Ricardo Villalobos is more like an artichoke -- a more subtle fruit that's consumed by peeling off.

In the last several years, Ricardo Villalobos has emerged as one of the foremost producers in that Zone That Has No Name -- minimalism that's too rosy-cheeked to be minimal, techno too slinky (and dare we say: feminine) to be. For most of the first 45 seconds of Chilean producer Ricardo Villalobos' debut album Alcachofa the only sound is provided by a vocodered voice. But rather than using that device to turn man into.

RICARDO VILLALOBOS (Chile)
He’s been called “the first true genius 21st century techno has produced” by none other than Pitchfork , and many artists and admirers around the world are apt to agree: Ricardo Villalobos has a mind for minimal techno that few others share, and as result the genre has lunged forward in this decade on the back of his achievements.
Born in Chile just before Pinochet’s military junta in 1973, the Villalobos family went into exile in Germany, and this was where Ricardo first developed a taste for techno. Though he began producing his own music in 1993, it wasn’t until 2003’s Alcachofa , his debut album, when he began to develop his own sound. That album produced the hit “Easy Lee ”, and he quickly moved on from there to 2004’s groundbreaking Thé Au Harem D’Archimède , an alternately frustrating and brilliant album that set the tone for the rest of the genre in the year’s that followed. Since then, Villalobos has gone from success to success, with marathon singles Achso and Fizheuer Zieheuer (both 2006), his Fabric 36 mix (2007) of his own unreleased material, and Vasco (2008), the series of EP’s that culminated in an album.
A North American exclusive, Villalobos arrives at MUTEK_10 a veteran of our stages, primed to deliver a marathon set with Perlon founder Zip (aka Thomas Franzmann).

ZIP (Germany)
There aren’t many forces in minimal techno that are as influential behind the scenes as they are in the spotlight, but Thomas Franzmann is one of them. On record, Franzmann is better known as Zip, Pantytec or Dimbiman . Behind the scenes, he serves as co-founder of the massively influential Perlon imprint, which has been home to the likes of Ricardo Villalobos, Akufen, Thomas Melchior , and numerous other producers who have collectively raised the bar for an entire generation of producers.
Franzmann’s illustrious career began in 1985 as singer for the experimental industrial band Second Voice . In 1992 he moved to Frankfurt and joined the EBM band Bigod 20 . After several releases the band split. In 1996 he got together with Markus Nikolai and Chris Rehberger to form the audio-visual project Pile , which performed at the 2000 FCMM Media Lounge, a showcase that was a precursor to MUTEK. In 1997, Franzmann and Nikolai founded the Perlon label.
These days, he is an in-demand DJ with residencies at some of the world’s best clubs, Robert Johnson in Offenbach and the Panorama Bar in Berlin among them. As consummate collaborator, he has performed as a member of groups such as Pantytec, Narcotic Syntax, Baby Ford & Zip, as well as the Narod Niki project, the occasional collective laptop live jams he initiated with Ricardo Villalobos and that often include at least eight producers.
